Ridge Central Fundraising
Ridge Central raises money every year through our Character Counts Walk-a-thon. Each year the Character Counts! Committee chooses a group to support with the money raised by the students. The Walk-a-thon always takes place at the end of September. Students that raise $40 or more earn a drawstring backpack.
In 2019 Ridge Central Students and Staff raised over $1260.00 for the Advocate Center for Breast Care in memoriam of our Ms. "D"!
13th Annual
Character Counts! Walk-A-Thon
Friday, September 27, 2019 at 1:30pm
Students attending District 127.5 will be participating in our annual walk-a-thon. Money raised will be used to support the District's Character Counts! program, as well as to provide support to the Oak Lawn Advocate Center for Breast Care in honor of all women that have been diagnosed with breast cancer, including current and former staff. Donations will help to provide free mammograms, a blanket warmer, and programs and education.
Why teach character?
A person’s “character” is the summation of his or her habits, attitudes and attributes. Because those qualities are learned, they can also be purposefully taught. And they should be - because good character doesn’t happen automatically, and it’s too important to be left to chance. The effectiveness and well-being of individuals, their organizations and their society depend on it.
What Is CHARACTER COUNTS!?
CHARACTER COUNTS! is the most widely implemented approach to character education, reaching millions of youth. CHARACTER COUNTS! is:
*A framework based on basic values called the Six Pillars of Character : trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
*Embraced by thousands of schools, communities, public agencies and nonprofit organizations for a simple reason - it works. These groups receive support and development from a national office, which offers training programs, free e-newsletters, resources and free consultation.
*Nonprofit, not religious or political (though used by both secular and faith-based groups, and supported by public officials of both major parties).
*Not a curriculum or add-on, but a powerful means to advance curricular and behavioral goals.
