Room 57 Newsletter

Here is what I have planned for the week of March 16 - 20:

We will continue working in Chapter 12 from now until Spring Break. We will spend next week reviewing geometry. The test is scheduled for Thursday, March 19. I have an "Escape the Classroom" scheduled for Friday.

We have finished the nonfiction unit of study and have begun our nonfiction book groups. The students chose the book they were interested in, and are now reading them with a group of students with similar interests.

The 5th graders should be reading at home every night for 20 - 30 minutes, depending on the amount of written homework that is given. Please check in with your child and discuss the books he/she is reading and make sure that the reading log is being filled in each night.

Science/Social Studies

We will be working in social studies from now until Spring Break. Our current lesson will cover the Plymouth Colony. The test is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18. After Spring Break, we will begin another science unit.

Word Study

In word study, we will be alternating a spelling week and a vocabulary week. We will also cover grammar every day. For next week we have a spelling unit. The spelling pattern is words with Greek word parts and the test will be on Friday.

In writing we are now working on publishing our memoirs.

Items to Note:

  •  Band Parents: Your child has been given a permanent band day and they are expected to bring the instruments every week, as well as, practice daily at home. The lessons will be during the day, so your child will be missing one subject per week. The students will be expected to make up the missed work at home that evening, with the exception of students missing library class. Please stress to your child that it is her/his responsibility to find out what was missed when returning to class. Almost half of my class has registered for band.

  • If you haven't done so already, please consider joining the PTA. This organization is run by great people who have the best interest of our schools and students in mind. The membership fee is only $10 per family for the whole year and allows you access to some great family nights for free!

  • If you are interested in being a guest reader at school, let me know. I would love to have you come and share your favorite book with the class. Our Language Arts time is right after lunch.

  • At the end of each trimester, I have a class raffle. Students can earn raffle tickets throughout the year for a variety of reasons. If you ever have any little trinkets you would like to donate, I will gladly accept them.

  • If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at lhammond@crsd1275.org or (708) 636-2001 Ext. 1057
